Abstract

In a fuel element of the type comprising an assembly of elongate fuel pins arranged within a jacket, a centring grid in the middle of the jacket is retained in position by two spaced sets of tubes which engage bores in the jacket the axes of the two sets are disposed in a plane 1 to the jacket axis and the said axes are all tangential to the inner surface of the jacket. Figure 2 shows a cross-section through the graphite jacket 1 just above the grid 3 (fuel pins not shown). There are four pins 6 in each set, a set being arranged abutting the grid on each side. The pins are slotted longitudinally.
