A lever 22 is rocked about a pivot 20, e.g. to initiate operation of a button stitching machine, by a cam 38 on a shaft 36 driven by a motor (32) (Fig. 2, not shown) through reduction gearing 34, under the control of an electrical circuit (Fig. 5, not shown) which controls energization of the motor (32) and of a solenoid 64 which operates a locking lever 54 for the lever 22. Closure of a foot-operated switch (94) energizes the solenoid 64 to pivot the locking lever 54 out of locking engagement with the lever 22, and energizes the motor (32) to rotate the cam 38 from its indexed position, wherein the roller 28 on the lever 22 rests at the foot of the cam rise, to give immediate movement of the lever 22. After initial movement, a lip 44 on the cam 38 releases a holding switch 52 which closes to maintain the motor current when the foot switch (94) is released to de-energize the solenoid 64. Prior to reaching the indexed position again, the cam lip 44 opens the switch 52, the cam and its drive being stopped abruptly in the indexed position as the lever 22 is stopped by the locking lever 54 which is returned by a spring 74 to its locking position. For continuous rocking of the lever 22, the foot switch (94) is held closed contenuously. A spring-loaded stop (182) (Figs. 6-10, not shown) may be provided to prevent rebound of the cam 38 from its indexed position when it is stopped abruptly.
