Abstract

<PICT:1080651/C1/1> <PICT:1080651/C1/2> A rotatable surface aerator for sewage and effluent has a plurality of ducts 31 formed between top and bottom discs 37,38 and walls 39; liquid enters through a common inlet 32 and is expelled through the ducts by centrifugal force. Air is admitted through ducts 35, the lower ends of which are joined by the deflector 34 so that each air duct opens into one liquid duct; the member 34 may be axially adjustable and the top disc 37 may have radial blades 40. In a modification the air ducts may consist of separate pipes (see Figs. 2 and 3, not shown). An aeration plant (Fig. 1, not shown) may comprise such an aerator in a circular aeration basin; there may be external pumped circulation of the liquid from an outlet in the centre of the bottom of the aeration basin to a shallow basin on top thereof, whence the liquid discharges through a central aperture on to an adjustable bladed impeller mounted on the aerator shaft above the aerator.
