In a system for correcting the height of railway track two tensioned wires, sighting lines, light or infra-red beams define two intersecting reference lines to which track-lifting and aligning machinery works. In the embodiment shown, infra-red beams extend between two transmitters (receivers) 3 and one of two receivers (transmitters) 4 mounted respectively on trucks 6, 7. On a curved section of track, the inner rail is levelled with respect to the reference lines and the outer rail is raised an additional amount to give the required camber. The beam intersection point may be positioned over one rail or over the centre of the track.
