Abstract

1, 249, 905. Photo-electric control of railway track levelling apparatus. F. PLASSER. March 7, 1969 [March 7, 1968], No. 12132/ 69. Heading G1A. Mobile railway track levelling apparatus is provided with means for establishing a horizontal reference line extending along the track, comprising a radiation source 11 located on a lead truck 10, and two detectors 14', 14" mounted on the track packing and levelling unit 1 which is already on levelled track. Also provided are two shadow boards 12', 12<11> mounted to the track height adjustment means 5, and shaped and arranged such that on adjustment of the height of the track, the upper edge of one shadow board 12' changes the intensity of radiation reaching the detector 14<1> and the lower edge of the other board 12<11> changes the intensity reaching the other detector 14" . In the arrangement shown in Fig. 3, only one arrangement as described above is used for one rail 6 of the track, the height of the other rail 6' being connected by means of a cross-level indicator 17 e. g. a pendulum, spirit level or gyroscope. The arrangement of Fig. 3 also shows two fixed shadow boards 15<1>, 15" which permanently shield upper and lower halves of detectors 14', 14<11>. Thus, when the track is at the correct level the detectors are obscured by the combinations of boards 12<1>, 15<1> and 12<11>, 15<11>. At levels above and below the correct one, either one of detectors 14', 14<11> will receive light and its output signal is used to control the hydraulic jack 5 to raise or lower the rail 6. The fixed shadow boards 15 may be omitted, Figs. 4-6 (not shown) in which case the differential output of the detectors is used to control the height adjustment jack(s). For example, each detector output may control the pressure to one side of the jack. At the correct track height the pressures are equalized; at any other the difference in pressure causes lifting or lowering. This method of control ensures that excessive raising or lowering does not occur, since with decreasing pressure difference the jack operation slows down. The radiation source may emit infrared or visible radiation and be pulsed. The shadow boards may be integral or separate and mounted on separate arms. Each rail may be operated under the control of its own photo-electric-shadow board system. A single source may supply all four detectors in the latter case.
