Operating variable-speed gearing. -- In changespeed gearing for motor-vehicles, the gear-wheels are moved by a sliding fork I engaged by a lever D, loose on a spindle B and carrying a spring plunger E, which engages a cam C, fixed on the spindle and rotated by the change lever. In the event of undue resistance to the movement of the gear-wheels, the plunger E is pressed into its socket, emerging and sliding down the face of the cam to move the fork I when the resistance falls. Spring plungers L, lightly engaging holes Q in the casing, determine the gear positions.
