Abstract

1,078,691. Flexible-tube pumps. CHALLENGE COOK BROS. Inc. July 9, 1964 [July 9, 19631. No.19878/64. Heading F1F. A flexible-tube pump for pumping concrete comprises an air-tight casing having a cylindrical shell 10, Figs.3, 4, and headers 11, 12 with the header 11 formed with a reduced diameter casing part 13. The shell 10 and casing part 13 enclose respectively flexible tubes 37, 57 with the tube 37 connected at its inlet end by a clamp 36 and nipple 42 to a supply hopper and the tube 57 open at one end to the inside of the casing and at its other end to the atmosphere. Plates 23 fixed to a shaft 14 driven by hydraulic rotary motors 21, one at either end of the shaft carry planetary wheels 28 covered with a rubber tyre 30 which on rotation of the shaft 14 progressively deform the tube 37 from its inlet end to its outlet end. The wheels 28 besides orbiting about the shaft 14 are rotated by means of a chain and sprocket drive about their axes 25. The tube 37 is held against the shell 10 by a plurality of straps 45 whose limbs pass sealingly through the shell 10 into recessed caps 51 held in position by quick-release toggle fittings 53. The shaft 14 also frictionally engages pneumatic tyres 62 mounted on a carrier 63 to deform the tube 57 to create a vacuum within the casing to help recovery of the tube 37, the amount of vacuum being controlled by a valve 64.
