Abstract
1,078,671. Centrifugal pumps. WORTHING- TON-SIMPSON Ltd. Aug. 11, 1965 [May 29, 1964], No. 22441/64. Heading F1C. In order to maintain an immersible centrifugal pump primed when the liquid level in tank 14 falls below that of the or each inlet 8 of the or the first stage impeller casing 7, the latter is contained within a chamber 10, 12 in which the liquid level is kept above the inlet 8 by creating a reduced pressure in the chamber through a ball valve 16 and vacuum line 15. Liquid is discharged from the pump casing 7 through two diametrically opposite branches 9 and subsequent pump stages B, C to an outlet pipe which may be offset relative to the pump axis, Fig. 2 (not shown). Liquid enters the chamber 10, 12 at the bottom thereof, the lower section 12 having a serrated bottom edge supported above the bottom of the tank by feet 13. The upper and lower sections 10, 12 of the chamber are connected by a flexible bellows 11 which compensates for variations in floor shape of the tank and during maximum flow conditions contracts to bring the lower section 12 well clear of the tank bottom.
