Abstract

107,865. Whitehead Torpedo Works, and Ridsdale, H. W. Aug 31, 1916. Force-feed lubricators.-A lubricator for the engines or motors of automobile torpedoes, applicable also to compressed-air or combined compressed-air and internal-combustion or combustion-product engines for other purposes, is arranged to flood the bearings with lubricant when the engine is started, the subsequent supply being controlled by the engine in proportion to its speed. Lubricant is delivered from a cylinder a, Fig. 2, by a piston b, g acted upon by working-fluid admitted at c. The fluid first depresses the piston against a spring f, giving an initial flooding, and the subsequent supply is controlled by a 'rod e which forms an abutment for the spring and is moved downwards at a rate depending on the speed of the engine. After a time depending on the pressure of the fluid and the strength of the spring, a stop comes into contact with the rod e, and the supply is then controlled solely by the engine. Fig. 5 shows a modification in which the piston b is depressed against two springs f, f<1> abutting against a plate p carried by two sleeve nuts n, n<1> which are moved downwards by the rotation of screwed rods m, m<1> by worm gearing l, k operated by the engine.
