Abstract

A diesel fuel contains 0.01 to 5% by weight of an oil-soluble, basic metal composition prepared by carbonating, at at least 50 DEG C., a mixture comprising (A) either an alkylated phenol having at least 6 aliphatic carbon atoms, or a mixture of a phenol and a polar substance having at least 12 carbon atoms and which is an aliphatic acid ester, an alcohol, a sulphoxide, an amine or an amine-aldehyde condensation product, and (B) at least one equivalent per equivalent of (A) of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal oxide or hydroxide. Numerous examples of the constituents of component (A) are listed. The alkylated phenols or phenols may comprise bis-phenols and naphthols; the alcohols may comprise Oxo and sperm alcohols and the amines may be partially acylated and hydroxyalkylated with, e.g., ethylene oxide. Carbon dioxide is passed into the mixed components, preferably suspended or dissolved in a diluent, e.g. hydrocarbons, chlorinated hydrocarbons or mineral oil, the reaction temperature being sufficient to eliminate water in those cases where it forms part of the mixture to be carbonated. The reaction product, filtered if required, may be added to the diesel fuel, optionally as a concentrate in a solvent such as xylene. It prevents sludge and varnish formation and renders the fuel more readily combustible. The fuel may contain colour stabilizers, anti-oxidants, rust inhibitors, dispersants &c., e.g. barium didodecylbenzene sulphonate, the calcium salt of the acidic hydrolysis product of polyisobutene, phosphorus pentasulphide, magnesium mahogany sulphonate, tertiary dodecylamine and the imidazoline obtained by the reaction of oleic acid with diethylene triamine or triethylene tetramine.
