Abstract
Polycarbonate fibres, fabrics and films &c. are heat-set at a temperature within \sB 2.5 DEG C of the temperature at which the tangent of the dielectric loss angle has its first subsidiary maximum. The fibres &c. may be heat-set at a temperature within \sB 1.5 DEG C of the specified temperature. In an example, a bundle of filaments of a polycarbonate based on 2:2-(4:4\sv-dihydroxydiphenyl)-propane is passed through a crossed roller drier maintained at 138 DEG C \sB 1.5 DEG C, the period of dwell in the drier being 5 minutes and the outlet speed of the bundle being 5% less than the inlet speed. The optimum temperature of 138 DEG C is found on the basis of tg d measurements at a frequency of 1 kilocycle per second of the material stretched at a stretch ratio of 4.2:1, the stretching dispersion region in the temperature range of 75 to 155 DEG C being found to have a maximum at 138 DEG C. In the other Example a fabric woven from the polycarbonate fibres is heat-set for 35 seconds on a tentering frame at a temperature maintained within \sB 1.5 DEG C of the optimum temperature, which in this case is 150 DEG C.
