Abstract
1,066,187. Stretching polycarbonate filaments and films. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. Sept. 22, 1964 [Sept. 25, 1963], No. 38595/64. Heading B5B. Filaments and films of high molecular weight crystallizable polycarbonates which have been stretched are further stretched at a temperature within 5 C. of that at which the tangent of the dielectric loss angle of the filament or film has its first subsidiary maximum, measured at a frequency of 1 kilocycle per second. Both the first and second stretching steps are effected in the longitudinal direction when the polycarbonates are in the form of films. The initial stretching may be effected at a stretch ratio of 4: 1 to 5: 1 and the elongation effected during the further stretching may be 20 to 50%. The polycarbonates may be prepared by polymerizing di - monohydroxy - diarylalkanes, -sulphones, -sulphoxides, -sulphides, or -ethers or mixtures of these dihydroxy compounds with each other. In an example, a polycarbonate prepared by the polymerization of 2: 2-(4: 4<SP>1</SP>-dioxy-diphenyl)-propane having an average molecular weight of 32,000 is melt spun to form filaments which are stretched at a stretch ratio of 3À5: 1 at the optimum temperature of 175 C. The filaments are then stretched at a temperature within the range 100 and 110 C. to a degree such that they are elongated 25%. On the basis of measurements of the tangent of the dielectric loss angle at 1 kilocycle per second the maximum value of this property is found to occur at 105 C.
