Abstract

A ferromagnetic yttrium iron garnet in which some iron is replaced by aluminium or gallium, also has some further iron replaced by indium and is given by the formula 3Y 2 O 3 .(5-x-y)Fe 2 O 3 .x(Al 2 O 3 ,Ga 2 O 3 ).yIn 2 O 3 where y is between 0.005 and 0.6, and is between 0 and 1.5. In preparation pure materials are utilized and allowance is made in assessing the Fe 2 O 3 content for iron produced in grinding. The oxides other than Fe 2 O 3 are initially in the form of oxide-yielding compounds. The initial materials are mixed, extensively ground, presintered, mixed with a binder, pressed into shape under 2 tons/sq. cm., and sintered between 1400‹ and 1460‹ C. in air or oxygen for four hours. The parts formed may be used for microwave purposes and the presence of the indium oxide has the effect of reducing dielectric losses.
