Abstract
Refractory bricks, masses and tamping materials, especially for oxygen converters, are formed from a burnt magnesia containing 76-88% magnesium, calculated as MgO, less than 1.5% silicon, calculated as SiO2, at least 5% calcium, calculated as CaO, a proportion of tricalcium silicate, more than 5% dicalcium ferrite, but at most 10% dicalcium ferrite or at most 12.5% dicalcium ferrite plus tetracalcium aluminium ferrite, and up to 5% free lime, all percentages being by weight based on the composition without binder. A binder based on tar such as steel works tar, pitch or hard pitch may be used to shape the refractory, and the products may be used fired or unfired, optionally coated or impregnated with tar after firing.
