Abstract

Zeolitic adsorbents of formula (0.5-1.1)M2O.Al2O3.(1.4-3.6)SiO2. (0.001-0.65)Z2On.(0-7.2)H2O wherein M is an alkali metal and Z2On is B2O3, P2O5, As2O3 or As2O5 are prepared by admixing with agitation aqueous solutions of a water-soluble aluminium salt, of a water-soluble alkali metal silicate, and of a water-soluble borate, phosphate, arsenite or arsenate or a mixture thereof at pH 1.2 to 13.0, thereby forming a precipitate, further agitating the reactant mixture for at least 5 minutes in said pH range, adding caustic alkali solution, subsequently maintaining the reaction mixture at between 35 DEG and 180 DEG C. until the zeolite has crystallized, and then separating from the mother liquor, drying and calcining the zeolite. The aluminium salt may be aluminium sulphate, the alkali metal silicate may be sodium metasilicate, orthosilicate, the borate may be metaborate, the arsenate, phosphate may be tertiary alkali metal salt, the arsenite may be meta-arsenite. The precipitate may be aged after separation for at least one day, say at pH 5.5 to 6.5 and resuspended in water before addition of caustic alkali. The crystallized product may be washed to pH 7 to 10. The alkali metal ion in the zeolite may be replaced by base exchange.
