In a chair for transferring an invalid, having stiff knee joints, from a standing to a sitting position or vice-versa, a combined seat and leg-rest member 14 is hinged to a back-rest 23 at 22 and pivotally supported at 13b on a rigid stand 10-13. On turning handle 19, a screw-operated telescopic strut 17, 18 moves member 14 from a vertical to an horizontal position or in reverse. The back-rest 23 is supported by a pivoted stay 26 which rests in one of notches 27.
