Abstract

A copolymer comprising oxymethylene units and units derived from an N-substituted acrylic monomer of structure <FORM:1076660/C3/1> where R is hydrogen or methyl, R3 is an alkyl of up to 10 carbon atoms and R2 is hydrogen or R3 is prepared by polymerizing under anhydrous conditions and in the presence of an ionic-type catalyst, a major amount of formaldehyde and a minor amount of the above comonomer. Specified comonomers are N-isopropyl, N-ethyl, N-n-butyl, acrylamide and methacrylamide and N,N-dimethylacrylamide or methacrylamide, N,N - diethylacrylamide and N,N - diisopropylacrylamide. Specified catalyst are the alkali metals, their alkoxides, butyl lithium, diethyl zinc, tributyl boron, phenyl magnesium bromide, ethyl aluminium dichloride, triethylamine, dipropylamine and tributylamine. The reaction may take place in an anhydrous organic solvent, e.g. hydrocarbons, n-heptane and toluene being especially preferred.
