[Also in Division D1] A copolymer comprises at least 50% by weight of acrylonitrile and 0À1 to 10% by weight of a compound of formula wherein R represents a hydrogen atom or a methyl group, A represents an alkylene radical with 3 to 5 carbon atoms which may be substituted with one or more alkyl radicals, the benzene ring may contain further substituents without active hydrogen atoms and X represents hydrogen, ammonium or an alkali metal or organic ammonium cation, the balance, if any, being one or more additional comonomers. Specified sulphonic acid compounds are 3-(pisopropenylphenoxy) - 1 - propane sulphonic acid, 4 - (p - isopropenylphenoxy) - 1 - butane sulphonic acid and 3-(o- or p-vinylphenoxy)-1- propane sulphonic acid. Suitable additional comonomers include methyl acrylate or methacrylate, vinyl acetate and vinylidene chloride. In Example 1, acrylonitrile, methyl acrylate and sodium 3-(p-isopropenylphenoxy)-1-propane sulphonate are copolymerized in an aqueous medium at pH 3À5 using potassium persulphate and sodium pyrosulphite as catalyst. No methyl acrylate is present in the copolymer produced similarly in Example 2. In Example 3 acrylonitrile, methyl acrylate and lithium 3-(pisopropenylphenoxy)-1-propane sulphonate are copolymerized in dimethyl formamide in the presence of mono-tert.-butyl permaleate, ptoluene sulphinic acid, dimethyl phthalate and H 2 SO 4 and in Example 4 acrylonitrile, vinylidene chloride and lithium 4-(p-isopropenylphenoxy)-1-butane sulphonate are copolymerized in dimethyl formamide containing the said permaleate, benzene sulphinic acid amide and H 2 SO 4 . Fibres and films prepared from the copolymers are dyed.
