864,137. Polymerizing vinyl chloride. SOLVIC S.A. Sept. 4, 1958 [Sept. 6, 1957; Nov. 16, 1957], No. 28487/58. Class 2(6). Vinyl chloride is polymerized at temperatures lower than room temperature in the presence of a catalyst consisting of at least one organic boron derivative of formula BR 3 where R is an alkyl radical. Specified boron trialkyls are boron triethyl and boron tributyl. The vinyl chloride may be copolymerized, e.g. with methyl methacrylate, and polymerization may be effect in bulk, in inert organic liquids, e.g. n-hexane, or in aqueous media which may contain freezing point depressants, e.g. electrolytes, to give crystalline polymers.
