Abstract

Vinyl chloride homopolymers and copolymers of controlled molecular weight and desirable polymer melt rheology are obtained using as a chain transfer agent in the polymerization process an aldehyde which is at least dialkyl substituted. The aldehyde is represented by the general formula: <IMAGE> wherein: R1 is hydrogen, lower alkyl having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, or cyclohexyl; R2 is a lower alkyl group having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms or cyclohexyl; and R3 is ethyl, propyl, butyl, or cyclohexyl.l
