Abstract

A process for the continuous separation of a basic substance from plant solids comprises the steps of extracting continuously introduced plant solids in counterflow with an organic solvent which is substantially immiscible with water for a contact time of not more than 180 minutes (preferably 45-90 minutes) and using at least 25 (preferably 100-200) litres of solvent per kilogram of plant solids per hour; continuously extracting the charged organic solvent leaving the extraction step in counterflow with an acidic aqueous solution having a pH value value of less than 2.5; drawing off the acidic aqueous solution at a content of basic substance of at least 5% and preferably between 15 and 25%; and replacing the amount of acidic aqueous solution thus withdrawn by fresh acidic aqueous solution. The process is particularly applicable to the extraction of nicotine from tobacco; suitable organic solvents are benzene, cyclohexane, isopropyl ether and some of the group of aliphatic halogenated hydrocarbons, methylene chloride being preferred. Sulphuric, hydrochloric and phosphoric acids are suitable for forming the acidic aqueous solution. Quantitative examples are given.
