Abstract

Sheets of thermoplastic material in continuous lengths are stretched transversely by the following method: at each side edge of the sheet an integral hollow loop is formed, closed at its outer edge portion, and held sealed at its inner edge portion; the loops pass on to, are held expanded by and move over suitably supported longitudinally extending fillers forming beaded edges, the sheet material passing through narrow gaps in fixed guides which diverge with respect to the central line; the material is drawn through the guides; and the exterior edges of the guides force the expanded beaded sides of the material apart laterally. The material may also be stretched longitudinally before, during, or after the transverse stretching. The loops may be formed by turning in the edge of the sheet to form an overlap and sealing the edge to the sheet (Figs. 1-3, not shown); or by superposing two sheets and sealing the outer edges (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown), or by using a flattened tube of material (Fig. 6, not shown), the guides acting to form the inner edges. The fillers may have one end free and located in the loop and one end supported at the beginning (Figs. 1 and 3) or end of the transverse stretching zone; in the latter case (Fig. 8, not shown) the loops may be cut to open them after the transverse stretching step to permit the passage of the fillers into the loops. Alternatively, the filler (Fig. 9, not shown) may have both ends free and be prevented from longitudinal movement by exterior means which hold the loop flat just beyond the two ends of the loop. The filler may be formed of polytetrafluoroethylene cords or a liquid or gas under pressure. The sheet may be open network, which may be produced from sheet material which is perforated or which is embossed on one or both surfaces with spaced bosses or raised figures.
