Abstract

1,075,799. Welding by pressure. ELCO CORPORATION. Oct. 12, 1964 [Oct. 21, 1963], No.41580/64. Heading B3R. [Also in Division H2] In welding the tail of a contact, the tail having a projection, to an electrical conductor having thermoplastic insulation, the cable is positioned between the tail and an electrode, the electrode is urged against one side of the cable so that heat from the electrode penetrates and softens the thermoplastic insulation, the electrode penetrates the insulation to engage the conductor and the projection penetrates the insulation to engage the conductor and an electric current is passed through the junction. To weld a terminal (12), Fig. 1 (not shown), having an upstanding projection (14) to one of the conductors (18) of a ribbon cable (16), the electrode (24) having a bifurcated nose (48) and heated by resistance or induction to approximately 250‹ C. is applied to the polyethylene insulation of the cable and penetrates to the conductor (18). The heat emitted by the electrode passes to the insulation on the other side and the projection on the terminal penetrates to engage the conductor. Condensers (32), (34), (36) are then discharged to weld the terminal to the conductor. A thermocouple (26) is associated with the electrode to maintain an accurate temperature. In a modification, the electrode has a single rounded tip and the projection on the terminal is formed by punching to form a recess opposite the projection. The depression caused by the electrode may be filled with epoxy sealing material and the welded joint may be associated with mechanical strengthening means.
