An apparatus for dispensing a measured quantity of liquid to a receptacle, such as disinfectant to a lavatory bowl (2) Fig. 1 (not shown) comprises a container 5 for the liquid 6, and a metering device (8) having an inlet 9 and an outlet 10 adapted to draw liquid from the container and to discharge a metered amount of liquid under pressure through the outlet and a discharge pipe (11). The metering device comprises a piston 17 slidable within a cylinder 15, the limits of movement being determined by stops 19, 21 on the piston rod 18. A compression spring is mounted between the stop 21 and the end-wall 20 of the cylinder so that after the rod has been pulled outwardly by a handle 22 to draw in liquid, via a non-return valve 27, the liquid is forced, via a non-return valve 29, through the outlet under the action of the spring; alternatively, a tension spring may be fitted between the rod 18 and the wall 20 so that upon pressing the piston inwardly to dispense the liquid, the spring is tensioned so as to return the piston and thereby draw in liquid in readiness for the next operation. The discharge pipe (11) leads into the lavatory bowl (2) and may be fitted with a spray nozzle (12); alternatively, the pipe may enter directly into the flush pipe 4. In modifications, the spray nozzle may dispense a measured quantity of liquid on to a felt or sponge pad so that the latter absorbs the liquid and allows evaporation thereof or the pad may be directly impregnated with liquid and the metering device actuated without liquid merely to force air through the pad. The container 5 may be of a synthetic plastic material, such as polyethylene.
