April 23, 1965 [July 9, 1964], No. 17225/65. Headings B3A and B3R. An apparatus for producing a lattice girder comprising chords and V-shaped struts comprises a reciprocating carriage for conveying the completed girder and gripping elements for the struts, the gripping elements being provided as a plurality of pairs pivotable at right-angles to the conveying direction of the girder with an outer pair reoiprocable in the conveying direction and an inner pair fixed in the conveying direction. A girder comprising an upper chord 1 and two lower chords 2, 3 interconnected by struts 4 spot-welded thereto in inclined manner is fed to the right in Fig. 1 from the welding station by a reciprocating carriage 5 and the struts are supplied at a position in advance of the welding apparatus to be arranged over the upper chord. The bent ends (4<SP>1</SP>), Fig. 3 (not shown), of the struts are positioned in guide rails through which the chords are fed and are received by the inner grooved gripping elements (10), (11), pivoted by shafts (14) (15). The struts are then gripped by the outer grooved gripping elements (8), (9) pivoted by shafts (12), (13), released by the elements (10), (11) and moved in the conveying direction by the elements (8), (9). The elements (8), (9) then release the struts which are gripped by the elements (10), (11) and return. These movements occur simultaneously with movements of the carriage, since the shafts (12), (13) are connected to the carriage. The shafts (14), (15) are mounted in bearings 25, 26, Fig. 1, in the machine frame and the shafts (12), (13) are rotatably mounted and axially slidable in bearings 21. The shafts (12), (13) are connected by pins and slots to shafts extending beyond the machine frame and these latter shafts are rotatable by cam and lever mechanisms from a shaft 27 as are the shafts (14), (15).
