Abstract

1,074,962. Valve tuning in four--stroke engines. RICARDO & CO., ENGINEERS (1927) Ltd. Oct. 20, 1964 [Sept. 5, 1963], No. 35150/63. Heading F1B. In a four-stroke supercharged engine, with overlap of the inlet and exhaust valve opening, the exhaust valve is moved towards closing at T.D. C. and then reopened for a considerable part of the induction stroke. The exhaust valve cam is shaped to give a lift curve A, Fig. 5, whereby the exhaust valve opens fully during the exhaust stroke, nearly closes at T.D. C., and then reopens, finally closing at point 10 about 150‹ after T.D.C. The inlet valve opens at 9 about 10‹ before T.D.C. and follows lift curve B to close at 11 after B.D. C. With both valves nearly closed at T.D. C., recesses in the piston to accommodate the valve heads are not necessary. In a six cylinder turbocharged engine Fig. 6 (not shown), the turbine has three entry ports each fed by a pair of cylinders whose exhaust periods are separated.
