Abstract

1,074,811. Charge storage tubes. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. March 6, 1964 [March 6, 1963], No. 8861/63. Heading H1D. A charge storage tube, e.g. a television pickup tube, has a double sided target consisting of an electrically insulating layer having on each side a thin conducting coating and exhibiting volume charge storage which is the storage of electrons trapped in the insulating layer on their way from one layer to the other layer, the charges being stored by directed high velocity electrons, e.g. accelerated through 25 kv, on to one side of the target, the layers being held at different potentials thereby allowing electrons to penetrate into the insulating layer, and the charges being removed by directing high velocity electrons on to the other side of the target whilst maintaining the coatings at the same potential. The electrically insulating layer is zinc sulphide and at least one of the thin conductive coatings is of aluminium. The layer is manufactured by evaporating a thin film of aluminium on a collodion membrane mounted on a frame, removing the film by baking at 300-400‹ C. for an hour, followed by depositing zinc sulphide and a further layer of aluminium. Alternatively a thin aluminium oxide film may be used in place of the collodion film.
