Abstract
657,116. Cathode-ray tubes. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. July 7, 1948, No. 18204. [Class 39 (i)] The capacity of the target electrode is increased by disposing a continuous electronpervious metallic film in close proximity to, but out of contact with, the target electrode. Electrons formed at the photo-cathode 3 by the optical system 5 are accelerated by electrode 6 on to a target 2 comprising a sheet of very thin " conducting" glass, passing through a metallic film 17 carried on a metal mesh or grid 18 with a pitch of 0.001, the film being at a distance from the target 2 of less than the pitch of the mesh. The charge image is scanned from the other side of the target by a low-velocity beam from cathode 7, electrons not restoring the elemental areas of the target electrode to an equilibrium value being returned to a multiplier 14. The film 17 is at a potential of +1 to +5 volts higher than the equilibrium value of the target. The film is applied to the grid 18 by coating the latter with an organic film, sputtering or evaporating a metal on to the organic film which is later removed by solvent action. The metallic film may be used with a target scanned by a high-velocity beam.
