Abstract
A penicillin-placenta complex is produced by contacting penicillin with a pharmaceutically-acceptable salt complex of an extract of placenta derived by contacting placenta with an acidic alcoholic solvent to form a liquid extract and adding to the liquid extract a base so as to precipitate a salt complex. In the example, human placenta is treated with aqueous ethyl alcohol at pH 2.7 at 20-30 DEG C., allowed to stand to precipitate proteins and NH4OH added to pH 9.6. The precipitate so formed is washed with water, dissolved in saline and mixed with an aqueous procaine penicillin G suspension. A preservative is added to the mixture so formed. A reaction is thought to take place between the penicillin and the placenta complex. The preparation has a prolonged action penicillin effect.ALSO:A medicinal placenta complex is obtained by contacting mamalian placenta, e.g. human placenta, with an acidic alcoholic solvent to form a liquid extract and adding to the liquid extract a base to a pH above 7 so as to precipitate a salt complex. In the example, human placenta is treated with aqueous ethyl alcohol of pH 2.7 at 20-30 DEG C., allowed to stand to precipitate proteins and NH4OH added to pH 9.6. The precipitate so formed is washed with water, dissolved in saline and mixed with an aqueous procaine penicillin G suspension (see Heading C2A). The complex produced has a prolonged action penicillin effect.
