1,074,487. Rolling. P. O. STRANDELL. Nov. 26, 1964 [Nov. 26, 1963], No. 48070/64. Heading B3M. A rolling mill suitable for small section rod or strip, includes an adjustable slide 12 within vertical slots 11 of which a pair of work rolls 6 and 7 are supported. The slide is longitudinally adjustable by means of a screw 32 so that the work rolls, one or both of which are biased against respective backing rolls 3 and 4 by means of springs 14, can be moved out of the plane of the backing roll axes to adjust the roll gap. The slide, which is readily removable for roll changing operations, is mounted in guides 30 which are attached to housings 1 and 2 of the mill. The slide is additionally angularly adjustable to a limited extent about a vertical axis, by means of a screw 36, the guides 30 being divided into co-operating parts with abutting, concentric, cylindrical surfaces 34 and 35 for this purpose. The plane of the work rolls is rotated out of parallel with the plane of the backing rolls by this adjustment. A guide tube 17, spring-loaded guide rolls 18 and 19, and a stripper 25 are provided for the work which may be hot or cold rolled. The longitudinal adjustment of the slide may be automatic, and under the control of workpiece thickness sensing means beyond the rolls in order to produce a product of constant thickness.
