Abstract

1,074,189. Plastic tubes. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. June 2, 1966 [June 4, 1965], No. 24662/66. Addition to 1,021,482. Heading F2P. The parent Specification 1,021,482 relates to a method of producing pipes in which a moving weak-walled tube 11 is closed at a fixed place 12 and filled with a non- coherent medium from the place 12 along at least part of the path it is to traverse so that the weak wall is supported whilst a coating is applied to the outer surface to form a rigid layer around the tube to make it self-supporting. The present Specification claims a method of the same sort in which the coating comprises a layer of material formed by one or more fabric webs 15, 16 which have been impregnated with a thermosetting resin at 19, 20, laid round the tube at 25, 26 with their edges abutting each other and hardened by heaters at 30, 31 so that a selfsupporting pipe is formed from which the filling can be removed. The pipe is plugged at 14 and filled with air from the line 13. Alternatively the tube may be filled with sand &c. The webs may be laid on the tubes so that their seams lie either longitudinally or helically, the seam of the web 15 being staggered around the circumference so as not to overlie that of the other web 16. The webs are of glass fibre and are impregnated with a polyester or epoxy resin.
