[Class 87 (ii).] Non-metallic articles are made by superposing layers of synthetic resin-impregnated threads, extending in different directions. Fig. 1 shows a load-carrying beam or bracket in which a layer of asbestos thread b is wrapped helically round a bundle of parallel asbestos threads a. Fig. 4 shows a casing for a stuffing- box. A mandrel z carries fixed endplates v, w between which and a fixed templet u the asbestos thread is wound helically to fill up the space. Longitudinal threads i<1> alternate at intervals with the helical windings. Flanged pipes are made in a somewhat similar manner, using alternate layers of helical and longitudinal threads. The wrappings are carried over the edge of the base so that on hardening, the base and walls are combined into a jointless unit. Fig. 8 shows the vane wheel of a rotary pump in which helical wrappings d alternate with other threads e and f. The vanes are also stated to be made with parallel fibre threads.
