Abstract
1,073,920. Web coating apparatus. J. H. BENECKE BETEILIGUNGS G.m.b.H. & CO. KOMM. GES. Dec. 24, 1963 [Dec. 31, 1962; Sept. 5, 1963], No. 51030/63. Heading D1L. Apparatus for coating web material in strips includes a ledge having a plurality of open passages extending parallel to each other and each communicating with at least one connecting passage in the ledge whereby a coating paste can be appplied to a web engaging the ledge through the open passages, and means for supplying the coating paste at a predetermined pressure. In the arrangement shown coating paste in container 1 is first sucked into closed pressure container 10 by vacuum pump 7. Valve 3 is closed and further evacuation removes air trapped in the paste valve 9 is then closed and valve 4 opened to bring the - container 10 to the pressure necessary for conveying the paste via pipe 26 to the paste distributing container 20. To enable continuous coating container 10 is duplicated (not shown) each being connected to pipe 26 through respective valves 12. Container 20 has a bleading valve 15, pressure gauge 19 and is connected via a valve 16 and pressure reduction valve 17 to compressed air pipe 18. The bottom of container 20 is formed by an interchangeable ledge 21 beneath which is a counter roller 22 over which material 23 to be coated is passed. The underside of ledge 21 has passages formed by means of ribs 28 and each passage is connected by one or more bores 27 with the inside of container 20. The container 20 is subjected to an accurately controlled pressure for feeding the coating paste on to the backing material. Due to the passages formed by ribs 28, the coating paste is laid in strips and by dividing the container 20 and connecting the passages with different parts of container 20 different colour combinations of strips can be provided. In a second embodiment paste is fed direct from a hopper by a continuous pump means to container 20.
