Abstract

1,103,744. Spray producers. GLAVERBEL. 8 Oct., 1965 [10 Oct., 1964], No. 42831/65. Heading B2F. [Also in Divisions B6 and G1] Articles or materials are marked, e.g. for decorative purposes, or to indicate parts containing flaws, by directing a jet of air transversely to a stream of marking liquid so as to cause droplets to be deposited on the material. As shown in Fig. 3, marking liquid passes from a container 9 through a channel 28 into a chamber 4, and air under pressure in a tank 17 passes through a pipe 23 into the chamber 4 to cause the liquid to issue in an atomised stream across the bottom of the chamber. In the bottom of the chamber 4 is a hole 6, and above the hole is a pipe 18 connected through a valve 16 to the air tank 17. Plate glass 2 moves in the direction 3 below the chamber 4, and if a flaw in the glass has been detected by a photo-electric device upstream from the chamber 4. the valve 16 is operated via a time relay, so that a jet of air from the pipe 15 causes drops of marking fluid to pass from the liquid stream through the opening 6 on to the glass at the defective part thereof. More than one opening 6 may be provided in the form of stencil apertures. Further, a number of openings 6 each associated with a pipe 15 and valve 16 may extend transversely across the plate glass 2, each valve being connected to a photo-electric flaw-detecting device. The marking fluid may be fed into the chamber 4 by gravity alone or by gravity assisted by air pressure applied to the liquid in the container 9. At the end 10 of the chamber 4 is a discharge opening connected to a pump 12 which returns liquid to the container 9. The liquid may be fed only during intervals when marking is required, in which case the air jets may operate either intermittently in phase with the liquid feeds or continuously. The apparatus may be used to mark containers which have defective contents revealed by automatic detection devices.
