Abstract
Bright chromium plate is electrodeposited on to a basis metal, e.g. Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, brass or stainless steel, using a plating bath containing chromic acid and sulphate and an anion of a halogenated organic carboxylic acid having at least three carbon atoms, e.g. dichloroadipic or dichlorosuccinic acid, anhydride or salt e.g. sodium thereof. Many other examples of halogenated aliphatic or aromatic carboxylic acids are specified. The ratio of CrO3 to SO4 and other inorganic anions including F ions, such as SiF6, TiF6 or BF4, is 125-550:1. The bath preferably contains 150 - 500 g/1 CrO3, 0.5 - 100 g/1 organic acid, and either (a) 0.4-3.3 g/l SO4, e.g. as Na2SO4, for a standard bath, (b) 0.05 - 2 g/1 each of SO4 and SiF6 ion for a mixed catalyst bath, or (c) 0.6 - 10 g/l SrSO4 and 0 - 12 g/l excess Sr ion, e.g. as SrCO3 or Sr(OH)2, for a self-regulating bath. Sulphogroups may be included in the carboxylic acid. The basis metal may be active Ni electrodeposited on to Fe. A Ni surface may be rendered active by cathodic treatment in HCl or H2SO4.
