Abstract

1,128,465. Electro-deposition of chromium. M. & T o CHEMICALS Inc. Oct. 5, 1965 [Oct. 8, 1964], No.42316/65. Heading C7B. A process for electro-depositing a bright decorative chromium plate on to a basis metal including or consisting of a metal having an atomic number of 24-30 inclusive (namely Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu or Zn) comprises maintaining a hexavalent chromium plating bath containing chromic acid and sulphate with or without fluoride or fluoride complex and having a weight ratio of CrO/SO 4 3- plus any fluoride or complex fluoride of 125-550:1, and an anion of an organic acid chosen from aliphatic dicarboxylic acids having at least three carbon atoms and aliphatic monocarboxylic acids but excluding trichloracetic and tartaric acids, and electro-depositing a bright decorative chromium plate from the bath on to the basis metal as cathode in the bath. The fluoride, if present, may be the silicofluoride, fluoborate or fluotitanate. The bath may contain Sr SO 4 plus a source of excess Sr ion such as strontium hydroxide, chromate or carbonate. The organic acid anions may be added to the bath in the form of the acids themselves or as their anhydrides or Na salts. Specified acids are:- malonic, fumaric, succinic, glutaric, adipic, pimelic, acetic, propionic, butyric, pentanoic, isobutyric acids and cyclohexane monocarboxylic acid. The Cr may be electro-plated on to stainless steel or brass or active Ni, e.g. freshly electro-deposited Ni (e.g. on Fe) or Ni which has been rendered active by cathodic or other reducing treatment. Examples are given of electro-plating Cr on to Ni-plated brass panels.
