Abstract

Bis-benzoxazolyl stilbenes of formula <FORM:1072918/C2/1> wherein each group R1 and R11 represents a hydrogen or halogen atom or an alkyl group having at least two carbon atoms, aryl, alkoxy, acyloxy, alkylsulphonyl, arylsulphonyl, cyano, acyloxy, amino, carbamyl or carbamoyloxy group are prepared by heating a mixture of sulphur, and a compound of formula <FORM:1072918/C2/2> together with a compound of formula <FORM:1072918/C2/3> The reaction is by condensation and elimination of hydrogen sulphide at a preferred temperature between 250 DEG and 300 DEG C. and at atmospheric pressure. Examples describe the preparation of 4,41-bis-(benzoxazol-2-yl)-stilbene, 4,41 - bis - (5 - chlorobenzoxazol) - stilbene, 4,41 - bis - (5 - chloro - 6 - methylbenzoxazol - 2 - yl) - stilbene, 4,41 - bis - (6 - methylsulphonylbenzoxazol - 2 - yl) - stilbene, 4,41-bis - (5 - methoxybenzoxazol - 2 - yl) - stilbene, 4,41 - bis - (5 - methylbenzoxazol - 2 - yl)-stilbene, 4,41 - bis - (5 - tert. - amylbenzoxazol-2 - yl) - stilbene, 4,41 - bis - (5 - phenylbenzoxazol - 2 - yl) - stilbene, 4,41 - bis - (5 - cyanobenzoxazol - 2 - yl) - stilbene, 4,41 - bis - (5,7-dichlorobenzoxazol - 2 - yl) - stilbene, 4,41 - bis-(4,5,6 - trichlorobenzoxazol - 2 - yl) - stilbene and 4,41 - bis - (benzoxazol - 2 - yl) -2,21-dichlorostilbene.
