Abstract
1,072,197. Transfers; etching. JOHNSON, MATTHEY & CO. Ltd. Oct.19, 1964 [Nov. 18, 1963], No. 45457/63. Headings B6C and B6J. A decalcomania for use in the decoration &c. of a heat-resisting or metallic base by an acidetching process is produced by applying to a flexible support or backing 1, carrying a layer 2 of a water-soluble gum, an acid-resisting material or resist 3 in accordance with a predetermined pattern, and then covering at least the resist with a coating 4 formed of a composition which is soluble in a solvent inert to the resist material and/or which is separated from the resist layer 3 by a water-soluble layer of gum, not shown. In use, the resist pattern is applied to areas of porcelain &c. preparatory to etching by a dilute acid, e.g. hydrofluoric acid. A gold decorating composition is applied to the etched areas and then fired. The layer of gum below the coating 4 is used if the layers 3 and 4 are of the same material. In one example, the layer 3 comprises 5.0 parts by weight of nitrocellulose ¢sec., 5.0 parts by weight of plasticizer, 84À5 parts by weight of butyl lactate, and 5.5 parts by weight of beeswax, and the layer 4 comprises 54À0 parts by weight of methyl methacrylate resin, 36.0 parts by weight of an aromatic hydrocarbon, 2.4 parts by weight of phthalate plasticizer, and 7.6 parts by weight of a diluent. Benzene or xylene may be used as a solvent for the layer 4. In a further example, the layer 3 includes a styrene-butadiene resin.
