Abstract

1,072,048. Refrigerating. DOWTY TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENTS Ltd. Nov. 26, 1964 [Dec. 7, 1963], No. 48409/63. Heading F4H. [Also in Division F2] The centrifugal compressor 15 of a refrigeration system is driven by a turbine 20 which is powered by the exhaust from an engine, e.g. a vehicle, i.e. engine or a steam turbine. The refrigerant, preferably dichlorofluoromethane, is one in which the sonic velocity is greater than the maximum compressor rotor tip speed occurring in use of the system. The system is located on a vehicle and comprises an evaporator 11 located in a duct 12 through which air is forced by a fan 13 to the vehicle interior, a condenser 17, a combined receiver/drier/sight glass 16 and a valved by-pass line 27 between the compressor suction and discharge sides, the turbine being powered by the exhaust from the vehicle engine. Multi-stage compressor and turbine units may be employed and the turbine may also drive another compressor used for super-charging the engine. As illustrated in Fig. 2 (not shown) part of the shaft (19) connecting the compressor and turbine impellers is formed as a helical screw (38) for pumping lubricant from an annular chamber (40) surrounding the shaft to a bearing (36) and thence to an outlet (41). A similar arrangement is provided for lubricating a second bearing (not shown) at the compressor end of the shaft. Shaft seals (see Division F2) are described.
