Description

1 1940? v A. GARELLI ,2
APPARAQUS FOR, COMPRESSING AND 000mm AIR Filed July 13, 1937 I Fig.1
INV ENT OR A DALBE -ro G RELLI i ATTYs.
Patented Sept. 17, 1940 PATENT OFFICE APPARATUS FOR COMPRESSING AND COOLING AIR Adalberto Garelli, Milan, Italy Application July 13, 1937, Serial No. 153,449 InItaly July 18, 1936 4 Claims.
provided to cool the compressed air to such an extent as necessary to condensate the oil used for the compressor lubrication and carried oif by said compressed air, as well as to prevent the high temperature of the air from causingthe vaporisation of the oil which may have collected in the reservoir or on the walls thereof to such an extent as to carburize the air contained therein and to develop conditions able to cause explosions due to self-ignition.
By the means of this invention the above stated danger is removed in a simple and safe manner and thus it is possible to reach with full safety the highest pressures obtainable by means of single stage compressors, this condition being particularly useful in compressors and in starting engine-compressor sets used in aircrafts, where highest requirements as to simplicity, light weight and safety are to be satisfied.
An embodiment of the present invention is -hereinafter described by way of example with reference to the annexed drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of an enginecompressor set with an air-cooling arrangement according to this invention;
Fig. 2 is a transverse section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a rear view in part in section on line 33 of Fig. 2.
40 These figures illustrate an engine-compressor set with air cooling in which the coil tube intended for cooling the air compressed in the compressor cylinder, is directly embodied in said set in such a way as to be cooled by the same combined flywheel and cooling air propeller devoted to cool the engine-compressor set. denotes an engine cylinder which is shown conventionally to illustrate an engine cylinder of any approved class whose piston and rod actuate a crank shaft which in turn actuates the rod and piston of a compressor cylinder ll having an outlet valve; I2 is the fuel tanksupplying fuel for the operation of the engine cylinder l0 and I3 is the outlet of compressed air from air 66 compressor cylinder II. A cooling coll tube 3 In said figures l0' is connected to said outlet [3 and the tube l5 leading to a compressed air reservoir (not shown) is connected at M to the outlet of said coil tube; I6 is a combined fly-wheel air propeller driven by the engine crank shaft and operative to cool said engine-compressor set and also said coil by the air stream induced by its rim blades l6 which draw air centrally and discharge it radially to flow over the cylinders l0 and ii and coil 3.
Of course the present invention is not restricted to the described embodiments and includes all" arrangements within the spirit of appended claims. I
What I claimas my invention and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. Means for producing and cooling compressed air for storage under high pressure, comprising a unit having an engine cylinder and an air compressor oil-lubricated cylinder, said cylinders having their axes located substantially in the same plane, a fly-wheel in said unit and lying in a plane located at one side of said cylinders, air propelling blades on the rim of said fly-wheel, a conduit leading from said compressor cylinder and adapted to be connected with a compressed air reservoir, said conduit comprising a portion located near the path of said blades and in the air stream promoted thereby and constructed to provide for a direct, smooth, unimpeded gravity flow of oil condensing from said air toward the discharge end of said conduit, and a hood embracing said engine cylinder, compressor cylinder, air propelling bladed fiy -wheel and conduit portion. 35
2. Means for producing and cooling compressed air for storage under high pressure, comprising a unit having an engine cylinder and an air compressor oil-lubricated cylinder, said cylinders having their axes located substantially in the same plane, a fly-wheel in said unit and lying in a plane located at one side of said cylinders, air propelling blades on the rim of said fly-wheel, a conduit leading from said compres- 45 sor cylinder and adapted to be connected with a compressed air reservoir, said conduit comprising a radiator located near the path of said blades and in the air stream promoted thereby and constructed to provide for a direct, smooth, un- 5 impeded gravity flow of oil condensing from said air toward the discharge end of said conduit, and
a hood embracing said engine cylinder, compressor cylinder, air propelling bladed 'fiy-wheel and I radiator.
prising a unit having an engine cylinder and an 'air compressor oil-lubricated cylinder, said cylinders having their axes located substantially in the same plane, a fly-wheei in said unit and lying in a plane located at one side 01' said cylinders, air propelling blades on the rim of said ily-wheel, a conduit leading from said compressor cylinder and adapted to be connected with a compressed air reservoir, said conduit comprising a coil tube located near the path of said blades and in the air stream promoted thereby and providing for a direct, smooth, unimpeded gravity flow of oil condensing from said air toward the discharge end oi. said conduit, and a hood embracing said engine cylinder, compressor cylngeer, air propelling bladed ny-wheel and coil 4. Means for producing 'and cooling compressed air for storage under high pressure, comprising a unit having an engine cylinder and an air compressor oil-lubricated cylinder, said cylinders having their axes located substantially in the same plane, a fly-wheel in said unit and lying in a plane located at one side of said cylinders. air propelling blades on the rim of said iiy-wheel, a conduit leading from said compressor cylinderand adapted to be connected with a cmnpressed air reservoir, said conduit comprise ing'a coil tube with vertical axis having an inlet at its upper end and a discharge at its lower end and located near the path of said blades and in the air stream promoted thereby, and a hood embracing said engine cylinder, compressor cylinder, air propelling bladed fly-wheel and coil tube.
