Abstract

1,071,743. Cigarette packaging apparatus. MOLINS ORGANISATION Ltd., and D. W. MOLINS. Jan. 7, 1964 [Jan. 7, 1963], No. 711/63. Heading B8C. Apparatus for filling boxes, or trays with a predetermined number of articles, e.g. filter plugs for cigarettes, comprises a fluted drum 3 which receives articles from a conveyer 1 and carries them past a photo-electric device 17, in circuit with an electronic counter, to a delivery opening 9 bounled on the right by flange 10 of a closure plate 11. The drum 3 is provided with suction means 5, 6, 7 to hold the articles on the flutes over an arc between the conveyer 1 and an article-retaining plate 8. When a predetermined number of articles has been counted, a signal from the counter causes a temporary stoppage in the rotation of drum 3, movement of plate 11 to the left to close opening 9 and retraction of a guide member 16, described in Specification 1,071,741, to above the level of the boxes. The rotation of drum 3 may be restarted as soon as plate 11 has moved sufficiently to the left to prevent articles passing below it. Boxes 13, 14 are moved continuously from left to right and plate 11 is moved to the right at the speed of the boxes when the leading edge of a subsequent box arrives beneath flange 10. A bar 19 carrying rods 18 is horizontally reciprocable to assist the distribution of articles and to break up localized piles thereof. Various drive means for the plate 11 and types of counter are described.'
