An end support member for a cylindrical winding of a transformer or reactor is formed by bending into a circular or arc-shaped formation an insulating rod, strip or plate member 61 (Fig. 11) having transverse slots 62 therein. The support may be of pressboard or blockboard and may have V-shaped slots on one or both sides (Figs. 7 and 8, not shown). It may be tapered in width on one side, possibly with a step in that side (Fig. 9, not shown) by an amount corresponding to the winding pitch. The rod strip or plate may be held in its bent shape on the winding former &c. by wrappings of insulating strip disposed in shallow grooves in its outer surface or by sticking it to the former directly or by means of adhesive foil. It may be formed by sticking slightly tapering blocks of insulating material 68 (Fig. 12, not shown) to one or both sides of a thin backing strip 69. Grooves for the insulating wrappings may be formed by sticking on further strips 70. Two or more support members may be arranged one inside the other and enclosed in an insulating wrapping.
