[Also in Division H2] The switching device of a portable battery lamp for underwater use comprising a sealed waterproof casing containing at least one battery and an electric bulb as described in Specification 1,059,662 consists of a contact ring 130 connected to one side of the battery and a contact disc 105 connected to a flange on the shell of the bulb 84, a contact strip 454 extending from the disc 105 to a bent back contact member 300, the end of which is normally spaced from the ring 130, a member 462 slidable in a passage in the casing and bearing on the member 300 and an actuating means 304 in the form of a sliding plate having an operating button 306, the plate bearing on a spring 458 resting on a resilient cap 460 sealed to the casing. The underside of the plate 304 has lands 316, 318, 320 against which the end of the spring 458 rests so that as the button 306 is moved to the right from the " off " position shown, the land 318 engages the spring which bears on the cap 460 and the member 462 so that pressure on the button 306 serves to flash the torch. Further movement to the right causes the land 316 to engage the spring, pressing down the cap and the member 462 so as permanently to close the circuit between the member 300 and the ring 130.
