Abstract

Solution of polyolefines, obtained by low-pressure polymerization using Ziegler or Natta catalysts and containing constituents of the catalysts employed, are purified by treatment with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal base, or NH4OH, and with H2O2 or O2 (including air), followed by recover directly from the resulting mixture without prior removal of the aqueous phase from the mixture. The polymerization may be carried out in the presence of a solvent, or in bulk. In the examples, the mixture resulting from the polymerization of 1-butene using TiCl3/Al(C2H5)2Cl in the presence of n-heptane was treated with (1) LiOH/H2O2, (2) NaOH/H2O2, (3) KOH/H2O2, (4) Be(OH)2/H2O2, (5) Mg(OH)2/O2, (6) Ca(OH)2/O2, (7) Sr(OH)2/H2O2, (8) Ba(OH)2/air, (10) NaOH/air, and (11) methanol/acidulated water/dilute caustic soda/water.
