Abstract

Polymers obtained by a low-pressure olefin polymerization process in the presence of a Ziegler catalyst are worked up by treating with an oxidizing agent and with a liquid reagent for decomposing the catalyst. It is preferred that the liquid reagent is added to the polymer and the mixture treated with the oxidizing agent. Specified oxidizing agents are oxygen, air, a gaseous mixture containing free oxygen ozone, or an organic peroxide, while ethanol, butanol, water, dilute aqueous hydrochloric acid and organic hydroxy compounds e.g. glycols are specified as liquid reagents. It is preferred that the polymer is treated as the slurry obtained by the Ziegler polymerization process. Ethylene is the specified polymer.
