Abstract

507,339. Indiarubber compositions. STEVENS, A. H. (Phillips' Petroleum Co.) Dec. 14, 1937, No. 34575. [Class 70] [Also in Groups IV and III] The complex products obtainable by the reaction of sulphur dioxide with aliphatic compounds containing an olefinic linkage are decomposed by reaction with an inorganic or organic basic reagent or a solution thereof. The products so obtained include neutral oils containing carbon, hydrogen, sulphur and oxygen, and these may be used as rubber softeners. The materials which may be treated include the products obtainable from sulphur dioxide and ethylene, propylene, butene-1, pentene-1, hexene-1, heptene-1, buteno-2, pentene-2, - hexene-2, isopropylethylene, allyl alcohol, and undecylenic. acid. The basic reagents which may be used include aqueous or alcoholic solutions of alkali and alkaline-earth hydroxides or of alkali or alkaline-earth salts of weak acids, ammonium hydroxide, liquid ammonia, hydrazine hydrate and amines ; specified amines are methylamine, n-butylamine, allylamine, benzylamine, ethylenediamine, aniline, diethylamine, di-n-butylamine, piperidine, morpholine, trimethylamine, triethylamine, tri-n-butylamine, triethanolamine, and pyridine.
