In a ladder for use as an extensible or step ladder comprising a section 10 having pivoted guides 11 engaging the second section 14 and, for use when the ladder is used as a step ladder, abutments 16 to engage the upper end of the section 14 which has stops 19 engaging the guides 11, the section 14 is provided with guides 21 for a third ladder section. For use as an extensible ladder the section 14 is slid through the guides 11 and has hooks to engage a rung of the section 10.
