Abstract

DL-Glutamic acid hydrochloride is optically resolved by adding to a supersturated solution thereof at least 1% (based on the weight of desired optical isomer in the solution) of seed crystals of one optically-active form of glutamic acid hydrochloride, crystallizing solids from the solution, removing said solids from the solution before spontaneous nucleation and crystallization of any substantial portion of the non-seeded enantiomorph occurs, heating the mother liquor at 180 DEG to 200 DEG C. to convert the remaining glutamic acid hydrochloride to the fully racemic form and supersaturating the resulting solution with respect to DL-glutamic acid hydrochloride to provide a solution capable of further resolution.
