Abstract
Racemic glutamic acid is resolved by making a hot saturated solution of racemic glutamic acid in sufficient aqueous potassium hydroxide to convert not more than 85% of the acid to the mono potassium salt, cooling to below the temperature at which all the glutamic acid would just dissolve, seeding the solution with solid crystals of the desired optically active isomer, and cooling further until the active isomer crystallizes out. The original solution may also contain a proportion of the optical isomer which is to be isolated.
