Abstract
The invention comprises a process for obtaining L-glutamic acid and D-glutamic acid in succession by resolution of racemic glutamic acid in a solution containing racemic glutamic acid, water, and mineral acid or alkali, which comprises making and maintaining the solution supersaturated with respect to anhydrous glutamic acid at above 20 DEG C., inoculating the supersaturated solution with crystal seeds of one of the optically active forms of glutamic acid, maintaining the supersaturated state of the solution as the inoculated seeds grow under agitation, removing the multiplied crystals from the solution, adding racemic glutamic acid to the mother liquid to restore the supersaturated state at above 20 DEG C., repeating the inoculation with the other optically active isomer of glutamic acid, separating the multiplied crystals, and repeating the above steps successively in cycles. The supersaturated state may be produced and maintained by addition of racemic glutamic acid monohydrate as a solid phase, or by cooling, evaporation, or partial neutralisation, or by combinations of these methods. When hydrochloric acid or ammonia is used as the third component in the supersaturated solution, seeding is effected with optically active glutamic acid hydrochloride or monoammonium glutamate respectively. Specification 773,661 is referred to.
